Living well for very little- A man and his RV

I just got done reading an article on Yahoo! Finance in their series of stories called Financially Fit- Saving Smart, Living Well that really hit me as a rewarding, but much different life.
This specific story focused on the life of Glenn Morrissette, 42, and former resident of Burbank, CA, and how he did a complete 180 in terms of his lifestyle. Morrissette said “I started to realize that it was costing me money to have an apartment big enough to hold all the stuff I never use”. His first initial plan was simply to downsize to a smaller apartment, but then saw an RV pass him and he wondered if he could “just live in one of those”? Well, the answer was yes, and he says he lives quite well.
Morrissette says that minus the initial investment he made to buy the RV, he spends about $11,000 a year. He contributes less than $300/month on gas (less than he was in California), $250/month on food, and has full health insurance ($80/month) with a good amount set away for his retirement. He said these costs could be even lower but he spends a bit more on organic and healthier food options, as his “guilty pleasure”.
However the most admirable quality Morrissette lives with is his flexibility in where he lives and where he can go. With his RV he travels wherever he wants and says he always tries to “put myself in an interesting place like an ocean, lake, or cool little town”. I’ve always wanted to see not only every terrain of the US but also wanted to venture to other countries and places to experience all I can, and Morrissette is doing just that.
Now to suggest everyone would be able and willing to make this change would be unreasonable. But I do think that a certain amount of time in everyone’s life should be spent alone or with a few others isolated from their current life and surroundings. The freedom to spend a weekend, week, month, year, or more without worry and responsibility is an enviable vacation. Especially today with the up-to-the-second updates on social media and smartphones, getting away to see what nature has to offer is something you should not take for granted.
